Zadars Sphinx is the largest in Europe; the legend it holds consists of a love story from back in the day.
The largest sphinx in Europe lies on the coast of Zadar.
In 1918, Giovanni Smirich built the 5m long and 3m tall concrete and stone sculpture in his garden at Villa Atillia in memory of his wife, Attilia.
The park is a 25-minute walk from Zadar Centre, located in the English garden of Villa Attilia, along with other sculptures. It is a beautiful little place to wander, admire, and linger in the shade on a Sunny Day. It is around the corner from Ostrirat-Puntamika Light House and Plaza Borik Beach, where you can rent a Jetski, do all sorts of watersports, and relax in the sun or dine at one of the numerous restaurants and beach cafes.
Once, goldfish were swimming in a pond between the sphinx’s claws. Poor attempts to dig underneath the statue to uncover the truth about the numerous rumours surrounding the sphinx destroyed it as many rumours have been about the sculpture next to the coastline.
One rumour is that a buried treasure lies underneath it, and another is that the statue is a tomb. To this day, the mystery remains unsolved.
Furthermore, the legend about the sphinx says that it fulfils love desire.
